The first written record by people of European
descent about this area was made by Christopher
Gist in 1752 when he led a land speculation company which was granted 200,000 acres west of the
Allegheny Mountains.
  
During the 1770s many land grants were given but no permanent settlements established. John Bunnell is considered the first settler in Ritchie County.
  
Many families came into this area from 1800-1830. In the 1830s the Northwestern Turnpike (which was first proposed by George Washington) was built. The turnpike started in Winchester, Virginia, and followed the Shawnee Indian Trail to Parkersburg.

Until the coming of the railroads in the 1850s the Northwestern Turnpike was one of the major transportation routes between the Ohio River and the East Coast of the United States.
    
Ritchie County was formed in 1843 and named in honor of Thomas Ritchie, a Richmond, Virginia, journalist who referred to it as "my little gem."
    
The county saw rapid growth after the railroad was built in the 1850s. By March 1857 daily trains were running in both directions. The railroad opened up the area for commerce and brought in many new people.
     
Today, no matter where you ramble in the county, the tales of wild cat oil boom days, fortunes made in timber and family legends that reach as far back as the Civil War remain.
